Climate campaigner reaches Brussels on electric bike

After an eventful 500 mile journey from West Wales, climate campaigner Dr Will Howard will reach Brussels on Saturday 7 July.

The hardest point of the journey was when he was pushed into the side of the road in Slough, hit the kerb and came to looking up at a rather concerned policeman. After a night in the local A and E, and a confirmed cracked little finger knuckle bone, Will decided to press on. "Averting disastrous climate change is more important than the odd broken bone or the cancer" says Will who has advanced prostate and bone cancer.

Will is taking a radical plan to Brussels calling on the EU to create a parallel 'Cap and Share' scheme to the existing Emissions Trading Scheme to control transport and domestic fuel emissions. "The present scheme only caps some 45% of emissions, if we add transport and domestic fuel we almost have a 100% cap. The beauty of the share idea - where emissions permits are given equally to all citizens to sell - is that it makes it simple, politically acceptable and compensates people up front" adds Will.

Will intends to give Cap and Share tee-shirts to Environment and Transport and Commissioners Stavros Dimas and Matthias Reute. "At the very least they will remember the 'Cap and Share' name. If we can get enough people to realise that our emission rights - in other words the sky - is being given away to the big companies, then the Commissioners and governments may find they have enough political support to put such a sensible policy as 'Cap and Share' into operation." says Will.

Will, who is UK Co-ordinator or 'Cap and Share', plans to spend a week in Brussels attending the EU Emissions Trading 2007 Conference, lobbying the EU Commission and talking with fellow campaigners. Transport, especially road, has the fastest growing emissions in the EU accounting for some 25% of greenhouse gases emitted by the EU.
